Chapter 13 - The Girl They Were WatchingLorenzo returned to Ravenwood before sunrise.

He did not sleep.

He doubled security.

Changed every route.

Canceled every public appearance.

Emma noticed immediately.

"Why are there so many guards?"

"Because I'm being careful."

"Are you scared?"

Lorenzo looked at her.

"A little."

Emma considered this.

Then she reached for his hand.

"Then I'll stay close."

He smiled.

But inside, something was breaking.

Someone had photographed Emma.

Someone knew her schedule.

Someone knew where she lived.

And someone believed an eight-year-old girl was important enough to threaten him.

Vivien found him in the study.

"You need to tell Elena."

"I will."

"And my mother?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because we don't know who can be trusted."

Vivien's expression hardened.

"Do you trust me?"

Lorenzo looked at her.

"I trust you more than almost anyone."

"But?"

"But I won't make the mistake of trusting blindly again."

She nodded.

"Good."

Then Emma entered.

She was carrying a notebook.

"Uncle Lorenzo?"

"What?"

"I drew the house."

She opened it.

It showed Ravenwood.

The chapel.

The library.

The study.

And beneath the house was a large black circle.

Lorenzo stared.

"What's that?"

Emma shrugged.

"I don't know."

"Who told you to draw it?"

"No one."

"Why did you draw it?"

"I saw it."

"Where?"

She pointed toward the window.

"Outside."

Lorenzo walked to the glass.

Nothing.

Just rain.

Then Emma whispered:

"There's a man."

Lorenzo froze.

"Where?"

She pointed toward the woods.

A figure stood between the trees.

Black coat.

Umbrella.

Watching Ravenwood.

Security rushed outside.

The man disappeared.

But he left something behind.

A small wooden box.

Inside was a child's drawing.

Not Emma's.

Another little girl's.

On the bottom was written:

LUCIA DUCA.

Lorenzo's heart stopped.

"Who is Lucia?"

His mother appeared in the doorway.

She saw the drawing.

All color left her face.

"Where did you get that?"

Lorenzo turned.

"You know her."

His mother whispered:

"She was your sister."

The room went silent.

Lorenzo stared at her.

"I never had a sister."

May you like

His mother closed her eyes.

"That is what we told you."
