Chapter 14 - The Sister Who Never ExistedLorenzo's mother sat in the library for almost an hour before she spoke.

"Lucia was born two years before you."
Lorenzo could barely breathe.
"Why didn't I know?"
"Because she was taken."
"By whom?"
"The Circle."
"Why?"
His mother looked toward the window.
"Because your father refused to give them what they wanted."
"What did they want?"
"The ledger."
Lorenzo stood.
"Then why didn't they take me?"
"They tried."
His mother's voice cracked.
"Your father moved you between safe houses for years."
Lorenzo remembered fragments.
A childhood bedroom that wasn't Ravenwood.
A woman he had called Aunt Rose.
A summer in Connecticut.
A scar on his left shoulder.
He had always believed those memories belonged to an ordinary childhood.
They didn't.
His mother continued.
"Lucia was used as leverage."
"What happened to her?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No."
"Then tell me the truth."
His mother looked directly at him.
"The last time I saw her, she was six."
Lorenzo's hands shook.
"And now?"
"We believe she survived."
Vivien entered quietly.
She had heard enough.
"Who has her?"
His mother answered:
"We don't know."
Mara arrived moments later with a file.
"We may."
She placed a photograph on the table.
A woman in her thirties.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
The same eyes Lorenzo had.
"This woman appeared in three surveillance photographs connected to Victor's remaining network."
Lorenzo stared.
"Her name?"
Mara hesitated.
"Lucia Vale."
Vivien stepped closer.
"Vale?"
Mara nodded.
"She was raised under the same false surname Vivien once used."
Lorenzo looked at Vivien.
"You knew?"
"No."
Vivien shook her head.
"But my mother did."
Lorenzo picked up the photograph.
His sister was alive.
And someone had deliberately hidden her.
That evening, an unknown number called his phone.
He answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
"You should stop looking for me."
Lorenzo froze.
"Lucia?"
Silence.
Then:
"You don't understand what you're searching for."
"Where are you?"
"You can't save me."
"I can try."
"You already did."
"What does that mean?"
Her voice softened.
"When we were children, you promised you'd find me."
Lorenzo's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't remember."
"I do."
The line went dead.
A message arrived seconds later.
May you like
ONE WEEK.
COME ALONE.
