Chapter 4 - The Changing TidesThe shift in Vanessa’s demeanor was not sudden; it was a slow, calculated erosion. Once the marriage certificate was signed and her position as the mistress of the Beverly Hills estate was secured, the mask began to slip.

Vanessa assumed control of Ethan’s social calendar and his home. She redecorated the mansion, replacing Ethan's comfortable, sentimental furniture with cold, avant-garde art pieces that cost millions. More distinctively, she began to subtly distance Ethan from his past.

Whenever Mary called, Vanessa would often answer, claiming Ethan was too busy with a board meeting or an international call. When Mary invited them over for dinner, Vanessa would conveniently fabricate high-society obligations that Ethan could not afford to miss.

"Ethan, darling," Vanessa said one evening as she applied her night cream. "I think it’s time we look into a premium senior living community for your mother. Somewhere in Ojai, perhaps? The bungalow she’s in... it’s just not fitting for the mother of a man of your stature. What if the press sees it?"

Ethan’s posture stiffened. "My mother loves that house, Vanessa. I bought it for her. And she doesn't need a senior home. She is perfectly capable and independent."

Vanessa sighed, a dismissive, patronizing sound. "I’m just thinking about our image, Ethan. In our circle, presentation is everything."

Ethan let the matter drop, attributing her comments to the immense pressure she felt trying to maintain their social standing. It was a mistake he would soon regret.
