Chapter 5 - The Mask SlipsThe tension between Vanessa’s manufactured world and Ethan’s reality reached a boiling point during a private weekend visit from Mary. Mary had arrived with a small suitcase and a tin of homemade chocolate chip cookies—Ethan's favorite since childhood.

Vanessa had looked at the tin as if it contained biohazardous waste. "We don't eat refined sugar in this house, Mary. The chef prepares all our organic meals."

Later that evening, Ethan walked into the kitchen to find his mother standing quietly by the counter, holding a broken ceramic mug. She looked shaken.

"What happened, Mom?" Ethan asked, rushing to her side.

"I... I accidentally dropped one of Vanessa’s designer mugs," Mary whispered, her voice trembling. "She became very upset, Ethan. She told me that single mug cost more than my monthly pension."

Ethan’s blood ran cold. He confronted Vanessa in their master bedroom. "How dare you speak to my mother that way? A mug, Vanessa? Are you serious?"

Vanessa turned around, her eyes flashing with sudden, unbridled arrogance. "It wasn't just the mug, Ethan! Look at her! She walks around this mansion like a ghost from a poor house. She doesn't fit here. She dresses like a beggar, she uses the wrong forks at dinner, and she makes me look ridiculous in front of the staff. I am tired of pretending she belongs in our world!"

"She is the reason I have a world!" Ethan roared.

Vanessa backed down, realizing she had pushed too far. She forced a tear and apologized, claiming she was stressed about the upcoming annual gala they were hosting. Ethan, desperate for peace, accepted the apology, but a seed of deep distrust had been planted.
