Chapter 6 - The InvitationThe annual summer gala at the Beverly Hills mansion was intended to celebrate Ethan’s latest multi-billion dollar corporate acquisition. It was the event of the season, with a guest list comprising Hollywood A-listers, tech CEOs, politicians, and international dignitaries.

Vanessa spent months planning every detail, from the imported white orchids to the synchronized swimmers scheduled to perform in the massive, infinity-edge pool that overlooked the canyon.
Two weeks before the event, Ethan made an executive decision. "My mother is coming to the gala."
Vanessa stopped writing in her planner. Her face paled. "Ethan, this is a highly curated corporate and social event. Mary won't know anyone. She’ll be uncomfortable."
"She will be comfortable because she is my guest of honor," Ethan countered, his voice leaving no room for negotiation. "I want her there to see what her sacrifices created. I’ve already arranged for a car to pick her up."

Behind Ethan’s back, however, Vanessa’s resentment curdled into malice. She viewed Mary’s presence as a direct threat to the flawless, high-society image she had painstakingly constructed. She began to formulate a plan to ensure Mary would never want to step foot in their mansion again.
