Chapter 13: The Uninvited Guest

Chapter 13: The Uninvited Guest
Elena did not panic. The woman who had survived the psychological warfare of her own family was entirely immune to the paralysis of fear. But the sudden resurrection of the past required immediate, calculated action.
Before she could strategize with Marcus, her intercom buzzed. It was her executive assistant, Sarah.
"Ms. Elena, I am so sorry to interrupt, but there is a man here demanding to see you. He doesn't have an appointment, and security tried to turn him away, but he told me to give you a name. Silas Thorne."
Elena’s blood ran cold.
Silas Thorne was a name she had not heard in over a decade. He was her father’s old "fixer," a ruthless corporate mercenary who operated in the darkest gray areas of the law. He was the man who made scandals disappear, usually by destroying the people who threatened the company.
"Send him in, Sarah," Elena commanded.
Marcus stood up, his jaw clenched. "Do you want me to stay?"
"No," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the heavy double doors. "I need to look him in the eye alone."
The doors swung open. Silas Thorne had aged, his hair now a slicked-back silver, but he still wore the same expensive, immaculately tailored black suits. He carried himself with the arrogant, predatory grace of a man who believed he owned every room he walked into.
"Little Elena," Silas smiled, spreading his arms. "Look at what you've done with the place. So bright. So fragile."
"My name is Ms. CEO, Silas," Elena corrected him, her voice a lethal, flat calm. "And you have exactly two minutes to explain why you are trespassing in my building before I have you physically thrown out."

Silas chuckled, walking slowly toward her desk. "I hear your auditors stumbled upon the Cayman accounts. A messy piece of history, isn't it? I kept those ledgers hidden for your father for twenty years. But when you fired the old board, the payments that kept the offshore bankers quiet stopped."
He leaned over the glass desk, his smile vanishing. "The media will have those ledgers by Friday, Elena. Your pristine, ethical empire will burn to the ground. Unless, of course, you hire me back as an extremely highly-paid consultant. Buy my silence, just like your father did."
