Chapter 22

Chapter 23: The Micro-Expression of Deceit
Victor Sterling stepped into Elena’s office the following Tuesday. He was impeccably dressed, projecting an aura of overwhelming, manufactured dominance. He smiled warmly, extending a hand, but Elena was a master observer of the human face.
She did not look at his smile. She looked at the microscopic tightening of his jaw, the slight, almost imperceptible twitch of his lower left eyelid, and the shallow, rapid intake of breath that betrayed his underlying anxiety. He was projecting power, but he was operating on fear.

Elena remained standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, the city sprawling behind her like a living matte painting. The natural light caught the sharp angles of her face, highlighting her absolute, unshakeable calm.
