Chapter 15: The Preemptive Strike
That evening, Elena sat at the massive oak dining table in her home, the manila folder open in front of her. Julian was sitting beside her, reading through the horrific details of the environmental violations her father had authorized decades ago.
"This is devastating," Julian murmured, rubbing his temples. "He poisoned the groundwater in three different manufacturing sectors and paid off the local inspectors to bury the toxicology reports."
"It's a monster," Elena agreed, staring at the numbers. "And Silas is going to release it to the press by Friday to trigger a massive stock sell-off and a federal investigation."
Julian looked at his wife. He saw the fire in her eyes, the tactical brilliance calculating a hundred moves ahead. "So, what do we do? Do we prepare the legal defense?"
"No," Elena said, closing the folder with a definitive thwack. "We don't defend it. We don't hide behind lawyers and PR spin doctors. That is exactly what my father would have done."
She reached for her phone and dialed Marcus. He picked up on the first ring.
"Marcus, assemble the board of directors for an emergency meeting tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM," Elena ordered. "And call the major media outlets. Tell them I am holding a live press conference at noon."
"Elena, are you sure?" Marcus asked, his voice laced with concern. "If we go public before we have a mitigation strategy..."
"Radical transparency is our mitigation strategy, Marcus," Elena stated firmly. "We are not going to let Silas Thorne hold our past hostage. We are going to blow up the hostage ourselves."

She hung up the phone and looked at Julian. He smiled, a fierce, deeply proud smile. He reached out and covered her hand with his.
"Burn it to the ground, my love," Julian whispered. "We'll plant a new garden in the ashes."
