Chapter 18: The Return to the Sanctuary

The corporate war was won, but the true victory was waiting for her at home.

It was late Friday evening when Elena finally pulled into the long, winding driveway of the estate. The headlights swept across the climbing roses, illuminating the vibrant reds and pinks in the darkness.

She walked through the front doors, kicking off her heels. The house was quiet. She walked up the sweeping staircase and pushed open the door to Aurora’s bedroom.

The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a nightlight. Julian was sitting in a rocking chair by the window, reading a book, while Aurora was fast asleep in her bed, her small chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm.

Julian looked up, a warm, relieved smile spreading across his face. He set the book down, walked over, and pulled Elena into a deep, grounding embrace. He smelled of cedar and the faint, sweet scent of Aurora’s baby shampoo.

"You did it," Julian whispered against her hair. "The news is calling it the greatest corporate turnaround of the decade."

"I'm just glad it's over," Elena sighed, leaning her entire weight against him, letting the heavy armor of the CEO fall away, leaving only the wife and the mother.

She walked over to Aurora’s bed and gently brushed a stray curl away from her daughter’s forehead. Aurora shifted slightly, murmuring something indiscernible in her sleep, completely oblivious to the massive, destructive forces her mother had just defeated to keep her world safe.

"She will never have to carry their secrets," Elena whispered, a tear of absolute relief sliding down her cheek. "The curse stops with me."
