Chapter 20: The Lesson of the Dandelion

Chapter 20: The Lesson of the Dandelion

Summer returned to the estate, bringing with it the heavy, sweet scent of blooming jasmine and the relentless energy of a now five-year-old Aurora.

Elena was kneeling in the dirt of the garden, wearing gardening gloves and a wide-brimmed straw hat. She was carefully pruning a rose bush when Aurora came sprinting around the corner, tears streaming down her face.

"Mommy!" Aurora cried, throwing herself into Elena’s arms.

Elena instantly dropped her shears, pulling the little girl into her lap. "Oh, sweetie, what happened? Are you hurt?"

"My flower!" Aurora sobbed, holding out her small hand. In her palm lay a vibrant, yellow dandelion, its stem snapped completely in half. "I was running to show you, and I tripped, and it broke. It’s ruined!"

Elena looked at the broken weed. To a child, it was a tragedy of epic proportions.

She gently wiped the tears from Aurora’s flushed cheeks with the back of her gloved hand. "It is broken, my love. But it isn't ruined."

Elena picked up the broken dandelion. She carried Aurora over to a small patch of soft, freshly turned soil near the edge of the garden bed.

"Watch," Elena said softly. She used her finger to poke a small hole in the dirt, and carefully placed the broken stem inside, packing the soil gently around it.

"Will it grow back?" Aurora asked, sniffing, her big eyes watching her mother intently.

"Dandelions are the strongest plants in the world, Aurora," Elena explained, looking deeply into her daughter's eyes, passing down the most important lesson she had ever learned. "People try to pull them out, they step on them, and they break them. But their roots go so deep, and their hearts are so strong, that they always find a way to grow back. Even when they are broken. Even when it’s hard."

Aurora looked at the little yellow flower, a slow, understanding smile spreading across her face. "Like you, Mommy?"

Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She pulled her daughter tight against her chest. "Yes, baby. Just like us."
