Chapter 1 - The Glass and Marble Monument

The night Ophelia Fairchild threw her daughter-in-law’s three-million-dollar wedding ring into the Chicago River, she believed she had just cemented her ultimate victory. Standing on the balcony of the Vesper Crown Hotel, a towering glass-and-marble monument that dominated the city’s skyline, Ophelia felt the familiar, intoxicating rush of absolute control. The night air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain and city exhaust, but inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was thick with the perfume of wealth. Six hundred guests—senators, venture capitalists, shipping executives, and old-money matriarchs—moved beneath crystal chandeliers. Every table was buried under imported white orchids, flown in from overseas just hours prior. Waiters glided silently, pouring champagne that cost more per bottle than the first car Nora Ellis had ever owned.

Ophelia surveyed her domain with predatory satisfaction. She believed she had just humiliated the young, upstart bride in front of the most powerful people in the city. She believed she had stripped a poor outsider of the final, glittering symbol connecting her to the Fairchild name. By the time the orchestra played its last waltz, Ophelia was certain Nora would be gone forever. What the matriarch did not know, as she watched the diamond disappear into the black water below, was that the ring was never the weapon Nora feared losing. It was the decoy. And the real trap had already been sprung.
