Chapter 10 - The Trap is Set

Halfway through the opulent reception at the Vesper Crown, the trap finally closed. Nora was standing near the edge of the dance floor, her hand resting instinctively over her lower stomach. Fatigue was setting in, and the heavy scent of the white orchids was making her dizzy.

Ophelia crossed the ballroom with the predatory silence of a shark. The crowd, trained by decades of social conditioning to watch the matriarch’s every move, parted seamlessly. Conversations thinned into hushed whispers. The string orchestra faltered, then resumed playing softly, as if elegant music could somehow mask the impending violence. Ophelia stopped inches from Nora, her eyes flashing with venom. “You actually thought this would work,” she hissed.
