One afternoon, Otto leaned in and whispered, “Some family heirlooms are heavier than they look.” Nora returned the next day alone, pressing the terrified man for the truth. In fragmented, fearful whispers, Otto confessed that years ago, he had helped create custom, microscopic compartments in several Fairchild jewelry pieces. These pieces were used to transport encrypted micro-storage chips across international borders, bypassing customs. Otto claimed he never knew what data they held, but Nora knew instantly: Ophelia used high society as a smuggling ring for her most damning financial ledgers.
