Chapter 4 - The Courtship and the Shadow

At first, Nora had not investigated the Fairchild family. She had simply fallen in love with Julian. He was nothing like his mother, or at least, Nora believed he wasn't. In private, Julian was gentle, quietly funny, and entirely unpretentious. He preferred dusty old bookstores to exclusive galas, bad diner coffee to imported espresso, and long walks along the river when the city was still asleep.
"My mother knows how to own a room," he had told Nora on their third date, looking out over the water. "I’m still learning how to live in one." That sentence had stayed with her, echoing in her mind because it sounded so profoundly honest. She loved him for his vulnerability, not realizing until much later how much of Julian’s life had been carefully curated and controlled by the very rooms Ophelia owned. His willful ignorance of his mother’s business practices wasn't malicious; it was a survival mechanism forged over decades of emotional conditioning.
