But Claire was ready. She stepped back, her hand moving with lightning speed. She grabbed the heavy crystal decanter from the side table and swung it with all her strength.

The heavy glass struck Daniel across the side of his face. He groaned, stumbling backward, blood pouring from a deep gash near his temple. He crashed onto the white sofa, clutching his head in agony.
"Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, looking around wildly for an exit. She bolted toward the front door, but as her hand touched the brass handle, the heavy deadbolts slid into place with a loud, electronic clack.
