Chapter 12 - The Confession on the RecordThe speaker on Claire’s tablet crackled to life.

"Daniel Vance, Vanessa Vance," Detective Shaw’s voice boomed through the high-fidelity sound system of the house.

"This is Detective Robert Shaw. I am currently parked at the bottom of your driveway with four state trooper units. The entire area is surrounded. We have been listening to your confessions for the past five minutes. Turn off the lockdown, Claire, and let us in."

Daniel froze. He looked at the tablet, then at the camera in the smoke detector, and finally at his wife.

The arrogance, the control, and the rage that had defined his personality for ten years vanished in an instant, leaving behind nothing but a small, pathetic coward.

"Claire..." Daniel whispered, dropping to his knees, his hands shaking as he reached out toward her. "Please. I’ll give you everything. I’ll sign the company over to you. I’ll confess to the fraud. Just don't let me go to prison. I won't survive in there."

Claire stood up. She looked down at him, her eyes filled with a profound, icy disgust.

"You're right, Daniel," she said. "You won't."

The heavy electronic locks on the front door slid back with a loud click. The frosted glass windows turned clear once more, revealing the flashing red and blue lights of five police cruisers parked on the wet gravel outside.
