Chapter 8 - The Return to Whispering PinesThe drive up the winding mountain road to the Whispering Pines Lake House was silent. The rain had cleared, leaving the pine trees dripping with heavy, cold dew.

Claire parked her SUV in the driveway. The house looked beautiful, a modern masterpiece of glass and cedarwood, but to Claire, it looked like a mausoleum.

She walked onto the wooden porch, her heels clicking against the damp timber.

The front door opened before she could reach for the handle. Daniel stood there, a glass of wine in his hand, a smug, relaxed smile on his face. Behind him, Vanessa sat on the white leather sofa, looking like she already owned the place.

"You made the right choice, Claire," Daniel said, stepping back to let her enter. "There’s no need for us to destroy each other in public. You sign the release, you take the money, and you can spend the rest of your life recovering in peace."

Claire walked into the living room, her eyes scanning the familiar space. She looked at the fireplace, the plush rug where the kids used to play board games, and the hallway leading to their bedrooms.

"Where are the documents, Daniel?" Claire asked, her voice flat.

Vanessa stood up, picking up a thick, white folder from the coffee table. "Right here. All you need to do is sign the transfer of your voting shares and the non-disclosure agreement regarding the corporate audit."

Claire reached into her purse. She didn't pull out a pen.

She pulled out a small, sleek black tablet and laid it on the table next to the documents.

"Before I sign," Claire said, "I think we should listen to a draft of my father's old research project."
