Chapter 13 - The ArrestThe front door was kicked open.

Four state troopers, their weapons drawn, poured into the living room, followed closely by Detective Robert Shaw.

"Hands behind your backs! Both of you!" Shaw bellowed.

Vanessa didn't fight. She immediately lay flat on the floor, weeping into the white carpet, her hands clasped behind her head. The troopers clicked the heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, pulling her up with no regard for her designer dress.

Daniel stood up slowly, his hands raised, blood still dripping from his temple onto his collar. As the troopers forced his arms behind his back, he looked at Claire, his teeth bared in a silent, desperate snarl.

"You think this is over, Claire?" he hissed. "My lawyers will destroy that audio in court. They’ll say you forced the confession under duress! I’ll be out on bail by Monday!"

"There is no bail for capital murder, Mr. Vance," Detective Shaw said, pushing Daniel’s head down as he guided him through the doorway. "And the federal government just issued a freeze on all your assets for corporate espionage and bank fraud. You don't have enough money left to pay for a phone call, let alone a lawyer."

Claire walked out onto the porch, watching as they were forced into the back of two separate police cruisers.

The rain began to fall again, a soft, gentle mist that washed the blood from the porch steps. She took a deep, clean breath of the mountain air. For the first time in three weeks, her chest didn't feel like it was being crushed by a iron band.
