Chapter 7 - The Shadow DetectiveIn a dim, rain-streaked unmarked vehicle parked across the street from the corporate headquarters, Detective Robert Shaw sat with a headset pressed to his ear.

Claire sat in the passenger seat, her eyes fixed on the entrance of the building.

"They're talking about making you have an accident, Claire," Shaw said, pulling the headset down around his neck. "That's conspiracy to commit murder. We have enough to bring them in for questioning right now."

"No," Claire said, her voice cold. "That’s a minor charge. They’ll post bail within hours. They’ll destroy the evidence. I don't want them in a interrogation room for a weekend, Detective. I want them in a federal penitentiary for the rest of their natural lives."

"What’s the next move then?" Shaw asked, looking at her with a mixture of respect and concern.

"We let them think their plan is working," Claire said.

"Tomorrow morning, I will agree to meet Daniel at the lake house. I will tell him I am ready to sign the settlement and hand over my shares. He will think he has won. He will bring Vanessa, because she won't let him sign anything worth twenty million dollars without her there to watch. And that is where the trap will close."

Shaw sighed, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. "The lake house is where the kids died, Claire. Going back there... it's going to be dangerous. If Daniel suspects anything, he won't hesitate to use force."

"I am not afraid of Daniel, Detective," Claire said, looking at the bruised skin on her wrist. "I died in that house with my children. What sits in this seat is just the executioner."
