Chapter 13 - The Final WeeksAs Rebecca entered her 38th week, her health dramatically improved. Her blood pressure stabilized, the painful early contractions ceased, and the swelling in her ankles went down. Dr. Grant was thrilled with her progress at our weekly check-up.

"Whatever changes you made at home," Dr. Grant said, reviewing the charts, "they worked. She’s healthy, the baby is in position, and you're good to go."

We spent the final days in a state of peaceful waiting. I installed the car seat, packed the hospital bags, and prepped meals for the freezer. I realized how much of this joy I had missed out on during my desperate scramble for overtime pay.

I had wanted to be a provider, but I had confused money with presence. The greatest provision I could offer my family wasn't a larger bank account; it was my time, my attention, and my protection.

On a Tuesday night, exactly four weeks after I had kicked my family out, I woke up to a gentle shake of my shoulder.

"Nathan," Rebecca whispered. "It's time."
