Chapter 5 - The Evidence They Left BehindBy five that evening, the apartment was empty. The silence felt unnatural at first. Now I heard only the refrigerator, traffic outside, and my own breathing.

I began cleaning. Not because Rebecca expected it, but because I needed to understand the full weight of what she had been enduring.

I picked up twelve pizza boxes, twenty-three soda cups, six bags of trash, and piles of clothing my sisters had left behind. I scrubbed food from the couch cushions and wiped down the counters. When I opened the pantry, I found the meticulous labels Rebecca had made weeks ago, now torn or disregarded. The expensive prenatal vitamins she was supposed to take daily had been shoved to the back of the bottom shelf, hidden behind my mother's instant coffee jars.

It wasn't just mess; it was a physical manifestation of disrespect. Every spilled drink and discarded plate was a message: Your comfort does not matter to us.

I spent four hours scrubbing the floors, doing laundry, and packing the remaining stray items my sisters had forgotten into a cardboard box. In the guest room, I found the final piece of evidence. Hidden beneath the mattress was a notebook my mother had used. Inside were calculations—my estimated salary, the cost of the apartment, and a written plan for how they could convince me to upgrade to a three-bedroom house "once the baby came and Rebecca went back to work."

They had never planned on leaving. They had planned on taking over.

I threw the notebook into the trash bag, tied it shut, and carried it down to the dumpster. The cold air hit my face, and for the first time in months, I felt like I could finally breathe. My home was mine again. Now, I just had to make it a home for my wife.
