Chapter 15 - Welcome to the World, SamuelAt 3:14 PM on a Thursday, the room filled with the most beautiful sound I had ever heard: the sharp, clear cry of my newborn son.

The doctor placed Samuel on Rebecca’s chest. He was perfect. Ten fingers, ten toes, and a mop of dark hair. Rebecca sobbed with pure joy, pulling him close to her heart. I leaned over them, wrapping my arms around both my wife and my son, crying openly.

"We did it," she whispered, kissing Samuel’s head. "He's safe."

I looked at my son's tiny face, his eyes squeezed shut against the bright lights. In that moment, a profound, primal instinct locked into place inside me. I had thought I understood protection before, but this was entirely different. I would burn the world down before I let anyone hurt him. I would never let the toxicity I was raised in touch a single hair on his head.
