Chapter 16 - The IntruderThe joy bubble lasted until the following morning.

I was down in the hospital cafeteria getting coffee while Rebecca and Samuel slept. When I stepped off the elevator back onto the maternity floor, I saw a familiar, unwelcome figure arguing with the security nurse at the locked double doors.
Patricia.
She was holding a cheap teddy bear and a balloon, raising her voice. "I am the grandmother! I have a right to see my grandchild! You cannot keep me out of there!"
My stomach dropped, followed instantly by a surge of white-hot anger. She hadn't respected my boundaries, the lawyer's letter, or the safety of my wife. She viewed this child as her property, a pawn to force her way back into my life.
I walked up behind her.

"She doesn't have authorization," I told the security nurse.
My mother spun around, her face lighting up with a forced, desperate smile. "Nathan! Oh, thank God. Tell this woman to let me in. I came to see my grandbaby."
