Chapter 14 - The Water BreaksThere was no panic this time. No frantic drive fueled by fear of losing our child to stress and mistreatment.

When Rebecca's water broke, we moved with calm purpose. I grabbed the bags, helped her into the car, and drove to Mercy Valley Hospital under the glow of the streetlights. She squeezed my hand through the contractions, but she was smiling.

When we checked into the maternity ward, the nurses recognized us. They remembered the terrified, hypertensive woman from a month ago. Tonight, they saw a strong mother ready to meet her son.

Labor was long and exhausting. For fourteen hours, I stayed by her side, holding her hand, feeding her ice chips, and murmuring words of encouragement. Every time she felt she couldn't push anymore, I reminded her of how strong she was—how she had survived so much already.

"You've got this," I told her, pressing a cool cloth to her forehead. "We've got this. It's just us now."
