Chapter 9 - The Work ConfrontationTwo days later, the chaos arrived at my doorstep. Or rather, my loading dock.

I was operating a forklift when my supervisor, Dave, waved me over to the front office. "Walker, there's a woman up front causing a scene. Says she's your mother."
My blood ran cold. I walked to the glass doors of the lobby. Patricia was standing at the reception desk, loudly crying to the security guard about how her son had abandoned her, how she had no money for food, and how she just needed to speak to me to "save my marriage from that woman."
I opened the door and stepped into the lobby. "Mom. Stop."
She spun around, her tears drying instantly. "Nathan. You blocked my number."
"Because I told you not to contact us. You need to leave."
"I am your mother! You can't just throw us away over some dirty dishes!"
"You endangered my wife's life and my son's life," I said, keeping my voice low but firm enough that Dave and the guard could hear. "You are trespassing. If you don't leave right now, I will have security escort you out, and I will file a restraining order."
She stared at me, searching for the boy who always yielded to her guilt trips. When she didn't find him, her face twisted into a sneer. "You're going to regret this when she leaves you."

"Goodbye, Mom."
I turned my back and walked away. It was the hardest thing I had ever done, but as I walked back to the warehouse floor, I felt a massive chain snap behind me.
