Chapter 1 - The Gavel Falls

The air inside Franklin County Family Court smelled of old paper, furniture polish, and the burnt coffee from the clerk’s machine. It was a sterile, unforgiving scent that matched the cold rain lashing against the tall windows outside. At a narrow wooden table, I sat with both hands resting protectively over the curve of my eight-month pregnant stomach. My ankles were swollen, and an ache radiated through my lower back, but I forced myself to sit tall. Across the aisle sat my husband, Marcus Hale, looking impeccably composed in a Manhattan-tailored charcoal suit. At forty-one, the billionaire luxury developer was the public face of philanthropy and success. To the reporters whispering in the gallery, he was a visionary. To me, he was a monster who had spent seven years perfecting the art of invisible cruelty. Today was supposed to be the first step in dismantling the cage he had built around me. But as the bailiff called the room to order, I had no idea that the most shocking revelation of the day would not come from Marcus, but from the man emerging from the judge’s chambers.
