Chapter 19 - The Rebuilding

A year after Owen was born, Elias retired from the bench. The ordeal had changed him; he realized that a life lived strictly by rules was a lonely one. He traded his gavel for a grandfather's role. He wasn't perfect—he still sent calendar invites for lunch—but he showed up. When Owen spilled juice all over Elias’s legal documents, my father didn't yell. He just laughed. I bought a modest house near him. I didn't want his money; I needed to know the roof over my head was unequivocally mine. I returned to my nonprofit work and founded an advocacy program designed to help victims of non-physical coercive control, teaching women how to legally document the invisible chains of financial and emotional abuse.
