Chapter 3 - The Recusal

Marcus leaned back in his chair, wearing the patient, burdened expression of a man dealing with a hysterical wife. He noticed the judge’s pause but misinterpreted it. Elias did not open the hearing. Instead, his voice, gravelly and absolute, cut through the room. “Counsel, approach.” The lawyers moved swiftly to the bench. I watched my father’s jaw clench as he spoke in hushed tones to the attorneys. When he addressed the gallery, his face was an unreadable mask. “I have discovered a personal relationship requiring immediate recusal. I will take no action on the merits of this case. The clerk will reassign the matter, and emergency issues will be heard this afternoon.” Whispers erupted like a lit fuse. Marcus leaned toward his lead attorney, Gregory Sloan, his brow furrowed in annoyance. Before stepping down, my father’s eyes met mine for one agonizing second. There was no promise of revenge, no triumphant I told you so. There was only the visceral, restrained agony of a father seeing the wreckage of his child’s life. He left the bench, but the true trial was just beginning.
