Chapter 5 - The Other Woman

The final lock on my cage had been Vanessa Reed. She was thirty-two, polished, and Hale Communities’ director of public affairs. She slipped into our lives seamlessly, coordinating Marcus's messaging by day and sharing his hotel floors by night. When I confronted him about the late-night texts and her lingering touches, he gaslit me with practiced ease, calling me paranoid. When I finally found undeniable proof of the affair, I was six months pregnant. He didn't even flinch. “Our marriage has become emotionally exhausting,” he had sighed. “Vanessa understands the pressure I carry.” Vanessa began leaving her jewelry in my bathroom, her perfume lingering on his coats. It was a calculated psychological warfare. They were training me to accept my own obsolescence. But when I finally filed for divorce, Marcus’s retaliation was swift and merciless. He cut my insurance, froze my accounts, and filed for full custody, painting me as an unfit, hysterical mother.
