Chapter 1 - The Ring and the TrapThe heavy mahogany front door clicked shut behind Daniel as he and Vanessa laughed their way into the foyer. They had just spent the last three hours at a high-end bistro, toast after toast dedicated to Vanessa’s upcoming beauty empire. Daniel was riding a wave of arrogant triumph. He was certain that by the time he returned, Claire would be weeping in the bedroom, ready to hand over the bank card just to beg for his forgiveness.

But the house was dead silent. The air felt thin, stripped of the warm, inviting scent of vanilla and fresh linens that usually filled Claire’s home.

Daniel walked into the kitchen, his smile fading. The breakfast table remained exactly as they had left it—except for three things.

First, the cold, coffee-stained mug sat in a dried brown puddle on the white tile. Second, sitting perfectly in the center of the dark stain, was Claire’s platinum wedding band, catching the afternoon sun.

Third, resting beneath the ring, was a glossy black tablet.

"What is this?" Vanessa scoffed, walking past him to grab an apple from the counter. "She left? Please. She’ll be back before dark. She doesn't have the guts to sleep in a hotel."

Daniel didn't answer. His eyes were glued to the tablet. The screen automatically illuminated as he stepped closer, triggered by a motion sensor. A video file was queued, titled simply: READ_ME_DANIEL.mp4.

He pressed play.

Claire appeared on the screen. She was sitting in a brightly lit room with stark white walls. A white medical bandage covered the entire left side of her jaw and neck, but her right eye was clear, cold, and entirely devoid of the fear he had spent eight years cultivating.

"Hello, Daniel," her voice echoed from the tablet's premium speakers, completely steady. "If you are watching this, it means you’ve enjoyed your lunch. I hope it was worth it, because it is the last meal you will ever have under this roof. You told me this morning that I either obey or I leave. I chose to leave. But you forgot one very important detail."

Claire leaned forward, her gaze piercing through the lens.

"You don't own this house. I do. My father purchased this property through a blind trust in 2018. You are a guest who has just committed felony domestic battery on the homeowner. Look down at the floor beneath the table."

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. He looked down. Tucked neatly beneath the leg of the table was a bright red folder with the seal of the County Sheriff’s Department.
