Chapter 5 - The Safe Deposit DeceptionAt 9:00 a.m. the next morning, Daniel stood inside the marble lobby of the First National Bank of the Coast. He hadn't slept. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and Vanessa was out in the car, weeping into her phone as her beauty studio lease was officially canceled.

Daniel walked up to the counter, flashing his state ID and a gold key he had stolen from Claire’s jewelry box weeks ago.

"I need access to Box 412," Daniel said, trying to project his usual air of wealthy authority. "Under the name Sterling-Vance."

The teller scanned the ID, her fingers tapping against the keyboard. Her expression remained completely blank, but she gave a subtle nod to a man standing near the security doors. "Of course, Mr. Vance. Please step into the private viewing vault. The manager will assist you."

Daniel felt a surge of adrenaline. Finally. A win.

Inside Box 412 lay the original hand-written journal of Claire’s father, containing the personal codes, private equity allocation notes, and the offshore account numbers that had funded the Sterling empire before 2020. Daniel believed that if he could get those account numbers, he could transfer enough liquidity to a Caribbean bank to disappear before Claire’s lawyers could finalize the divorce.

The heavy steel door of the vault clicked open. The manager placed the long metal box on the table and stepped out, locking the door behind him.

Daniel’s hands shook as he turned the key. He flipped the lid open.

The box was empty.

Except for a single piece of paper resting at the very bottom. It was a high-resolution photograph of the breakfast table from yesterday morning—specifically focusing on the puddle of coffee and the wedding ring.

Written across the bottom of the photo in Claire’s elegant handwriting was a single line:

The vault was cleared six months ago, Daniel. Thank you for providing the security cameras with a perfect recording of you using a stolen key.
