Chapter 4 - The Forensic TrapIn a high-rise office building downtown, the air conditioning hummed softly against the heat of the July afternoon. Claire sat in a plush leather chair, a cold compress held gently against the left side of her face. The pain medication had kicked in, leaving her mind sharp, crystalline, and completely detached from the woman who had tolerated Daniel’s subtle cruelties for eight long years.

Miriam Cole walked into the room, dropping a thick, bound folder onto the glass table.

"The forensic accountant just sent the final verification logs," Miriam said, sitting down across from her. "Daniel was clumsy, Claire. He thought he was being clever by routing the money through three different regional banks, but he used the same digital signature for every single transaction."

Claire looked down at the data spreadsheet.

"Total unauthorized diversions over eighteen months come out to exactly three hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars," Miriam said, tapping her pen against the chart. "It's grand larceny, embezzlement, and bank fraud. The moment we hand this to the federal prosecutor, he isn't just looking at a domestic violence charge. He’s looking at a decade in a federal penitentiary."

Claire pulled the cold compress away from her skin, looking at her reflection in the dark glass of the window. The burn was angry, red, and would likely leave a faint mark along her jawline for the rest of her life. A permanent reminder of the moment she chose freedom.

"Don't give it to the federal prosecutor yet," Claire said, her voice dropping to a low, cold register.

Miriam raised an eyebrow. "Why? We have him cornered, Claire."

"Because Daniel still thinks he has a card left to play," Claire said, a small, dark smile touching the right corner of her mouth. "He thinks he can use my father’s old personal papers in the safe deposit box to blackmail me into a settlement. I want him to try. I want him to dig the hole until he can never climb out."
