Chapter 9 - The Lake House AmbushThe rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets as Daniel’s sedan wound its way up the narrow mountain road toward the Sterling Lake Estate. The headlights cut through the thick mist, illuminating the dark pine trees lining the gravel path.

Vanessa sat in the passenger seat, silent, clutching her purse like a shield. "Daniel, this is a bad idea. There’s a protection order. If the police catch us here—"
"The police aren't here, Vanessa," Daniel hissed, switching off the car’s headlights as they approached the long, wooden driveway of the secluded cabin. "Look. Her SUV is parked out front. The lights are on in the kitchen. She’s alone."
He parked the car beneath the shadow of a large oak tree, stepping out into the cold rain. He didn't have a weapon, but his sheer desperation gave him a frantic, erratic strength. He walked up the wooden steps of the porch, Vanessa trailing behind him, shivering.
Daniel didn't knock. He reached up to the top of the doorframe, searching for the spare key Claire’s father had kept there for twenty years. His fingers wrapped around the cold brass.
He unlocked the door and pushed it open.
The cabin was warm, smelling of cedarwood and fresh coffee. Sitting at the rustic dining table, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, was Claire. She was holding a warm mug in her hands, watching the doorway as if she had been expecting them for hours.
"Hello, Daniel," she said quietly, not moving an inch. "You’re late. The storm usually slows people down on the ridge."

Daniel stepped into the room, water dripping from his coat onto the polished pine floor. "You think you’re so smart, don't you? With your trusts, your lawyers, your digital traps. You think you can just throw me out like a piece of garbage after eight years of marriage?"
"You threw yourself out, Daniel," Claire said, her eyes shifting to the angry red burn on her neck. "The moment you decided that my submission was worth more than my life."
