Chapter 12 - The Collapse of the House of CardsThe trial of Daniel Vance didn't make the front pages of the national newspapers, but it completely transformed the local financial landscape.

With the overwhelming digital forensics provided by Sterling Lending Group, combined with the audio-video recording of the breakfast assault and the lake house extortion attempt, the state's case was completely ironclad. Daniel’s defense attorney tried to argue for a plea agreement, but Miriam Cole blocked every attempt, demanding the maximum statutory penalty for each count.

Vanessa, facing five years as an accessory to grand larceny, took a plea deal on the third day of the hearings. She testified fully against her brother, detailing how he had systematically used Claire’s inheritance to fund their personal lives while mocking his wife behind her back.

From the witness stand, Vanessa looked small, broken, and utterly humiliated. "Daniel always told me Claire was stupid," she wept into the microphone. "He said she was just a placeholder until we could get the full control of the trust. I... I didn't know he was hurting her. I just wanted my studio."

Daniel sat at the defense table, his face gaunt, his expensive suit hanging loosely off his frame after three months in the county jail. He didn't look at his sister. He didn't look at the jury.

He looked only at Claire, who sat in the front row of the gallery every single day, wearing a rotation of pristine, high-collared designer suits that completely covered her healing skin. She never smiled, she never frowned; she simply watched the proceedings with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope.
