She stood in the penthouse office of the new Sterling Tech Venture Hub, looking out over the sprawling city skyline. The space was bright, filled with glass, natural light, and the bustling energy of young entrepreneurs working on sustainable real estate projects.
Miriam Cole entered the room, carrying a bottle of vintage red wine and two crystal glasses. "The final liquidation of Vance Consulting was completed this morning, Claire. The office building has been sold to a medical cooperative, and the proceeds have been credited back to your primary development fund."
"And Vanessa?" Claire asked, taking a glass from her attorney.
"She’s working as an assistant manager at a discount salon chain in Ohio," Miriam said, sitting on the edge of the desk. "Part of her probation requirement is a monthly restitution check to your foundation. It’s only two hundred dollars a month, but it keeps her accountable."
Claire took a sip of the wine, the rich, dark liquid warming her throat. She walked over to the large mirror hanging on the accent wall, looking closely at her jawline. The redness had receded, leaving behind a thin, faint silver track—a line that looked less like a burn and more like a mark of survival.
