The house had been completely renovated. The old kitchen tiles had been replaced with beautiful, dark slate, and the wooden table where Daniel had once sat had been donated to a local community center. The space was now hers, filled with her own art, her own designs, and her own choices.

Her laptop sat on the terrace table, displaying the early financial reports for the upcoming quarter. Sterling Lending Group had just recorded its most successful venture cycle in a decade, funding three new women-led technology incubators across the coast.

Claire looked down at her bare fingers, where the platinum wedding ring had once sat. The skin was clear, smooth, and free. She had spent eight years believing that marriage required submission, that love meant keeping yourself small so that someone else could feel powerful.
