Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Leverage"I don't care about the house, Claire!" Daniel shouted, taking a step closer, his hands gesturing wildly. "I don't even care about the consulting firm anymore! You’re going to call Miriam Cole right now, and you’re going to tell her to drop the financial fraud suit. You’re going to sign a release for my personal accounts, or so help me—"
"Or what, Daniel?" Claire interrupted, setting her mug down with a soft, controlled click.
Daniel pulled a crumpled manila envelope from his internal pocket, tossing it onto the table. "I found this in the lining of your father’s old briefcase before the lawyers kicked me out. It’s the original environmental survey for the Sterling Development project from 2022. Your father buried the report showing high lead levels in the groundwater before he sold the land to the county for the new school."
Vanessa gasped, looking at the envelope. "Daniel... you didn't tell me you had that."
"It’s my insurance policy," Daniel sneered, leaning over the table, his face inches from Claire’s.
"If this hits the press, the Sterling name is finished. The county will sue your trust for tens of millions. Your precious empire will dissolve overnight. So here is the deal: you give me five million dollars in an offshore transfer, you drop the criminal battery charges, and I keep my mouth shut. You either sign, or we both go down."
Claire looked at the manila envelope for a long, silent moment. She didn't look panicked. She looked almost disappointed.
"You really didn't know my father at all, did you, Daniel?" she whispered.
"I know he was a fraud, just like you," Daniel spat.

Claire reached out, flipping open the envelope. Inside was not a groundwater report, but a series of color printouts showing Daniel's personal search history from his corporate computer, tracking his downloads of the stolen files and his attempts to alter the dates on the environmental PDFs.
"My father didn't bury the report, Daniel," Claire said, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "The county school was built on the east parcel, which was cleared by the EPA in 2021. The report you holding is for the west parcel, which my father donated to the state as a protected wildlife sanctuary specifically because it wasn't safe for residential development. You didn't find a scandal, Daniel. You found a public record, and then you tried to alter it to commit extortion."
